Where this happens
This applies to toxic, corrosive, flammable, odor-sensitive, and fugitive-emission service — reactor isolation, tank areas, leakage-sensitive lines, and control points. Here the question is not just whether the valve survives the medium, but whether it keeps the medium contained.
How it goes wrong
Body material answers corrosion, but leakage escapes through the paths body material does not cover: the seat that should shut off, the stem packing where the shaft passes through the body, and the gaskets at every joint. On hazardous service the stem is the classic fugitive-emission point — standard packing weeps volatile or toxic medium long before the body is at risk, which is why bellows-seal and specialized packing designs exist. Seat leakage class, fire-safe certification, and anti-static continuity are pass/fail duty requirements, not upgrades: a valve chosen for body compatibility alone can be fully corrosion-resistant and still fail the emission or leak-class the line requires.
