Where this happens
These valves work around coke ovens, blast-furnace support systems, dust removal, flue gas, and hot utility lines — often in positions that are hard to reach and cannot be shut down easily. The surrounding environment is as harsh as the medium inside.
How it goes wrong
The mistake is selecting on the internal medium alone. Sustained external heat hardens and shrinks standard packing and seals until they leak, while airborne dust and scaling pack around the stem and actuator until they seize — so the valve fails at the packing or the actuator, not the body. The accessories suffer first: an actuator, limit switch, or cable rated for normal ambient conditions degrades fast next to a furnace. A valve that is correct for the flow inside can still be wrong for the heat and dust outside it.
