Safety Valve Set Pressure and Document Review

Where this happens

Safety valves sit on boilers, pressure vessels, steam systems, and air receivers — anywhere a code requires overpressure protection. They are specified by the project or equipment side, and their whole purpose is to open at a defined pressure and pass a defined flow.

How it goes wrong

The mistake is treating a safety valve like a normal isolation valve chosen by size and class. What matters is the set pressure and the relieving capacity — the valve has to open at exactly the right pressure and pass enough flow to protect the equipment, which is an engineering-safety calculation done by the project or equipment designer. Supply review cannot replace that calculation: the job is to match a valve, its certificate, test report, calibration, and marking to the set pressure and standard already specified. A correct-looking valve with the wrong set pressure, no capacity basis, or missing test documents is not a safe supply, however well it is built.
