Slurry Pump Discharge Check Valve Review

Where this happens

These check valves sit after slurry, tailings, and abrasive process pumps, where a pump stop can drive reverse flow and slam while the medium itself grinds the valve. Both problems land on the same valve at the same position.

How it goes wrong

A slurry pump check has to do two things that pull against each other. Like any pump check it must close before reverse flow builds, or it slams; like any slurry valve, its wetted parts are ground down by solids at velocity. The trouble is that the discs, hinges, and seats that give a fast, soft close are exactly what abrasion attacks — and packed solids can hold a disc open or jam it shut. A clean-water check valve dropped into this duty either slams, wears through, or seizes. So closing behavior and abrasion resistance have to be reviewed as one problem, not two.
