Where this happens
Steam valves run on main and auxiliary steam, boiler feedwater, condensate, drain, blowdown, and reducing stations. Across those positions the temperature swings widely, and it is the temperature — not just the pressure — that changes which valve is right.
How it goes wrong
The common mistake is treating design temperature as an afterthought behind line size. Temperature is the hidden main parameter: sustained heat rules out standard trim, packing, and gasket materials that would be fine on cold water at the same pressure, and it shifts the body material and class. Drain, blowdown, and throttling positions add erosion and thermal cycling that a plain isolation valve is not built for. So a valve chosen on DN and pressure class alone can still be wrong for the heat it actually sees.
