Where this happens
Coated and lined valves show up across intake, pump isolation, process lines, wastewater discharge, desalination, and distribution — anywhere a carbon-steel or ductile body needs a barrier against the water. The coating is doing the corrosion job the base metal cannot.
How it goes wrong
A coating protects only where it stays continuous and bonded, so its failures are local. A holiday — a pinhole or thin spot — exposes bare metal that corrodes and then undercuts the surrounding film, and poor adhesion lets the coating disbond in sheets under wet or cyclic service. Lining thickness and repairability matter for the same reason: a thin or damaged liner fails first at that spot. And the barrier has to match the exposure — an epoxy that is fine on clean water can blister under chemical service, and a rubber lining that resists corrosion can be stripped by abrasive solids. So the choice is not "coated or not" but which barrier suits the water and how its integrity is proven.
